Filming Day Part 2
Welcome back to my blog reader! For the second day of filming, I began with the scene where the protagonist Gabriela is found sleeping on the couch leading to the audience finding out that it was all a dream. I had also limited time to film the second day as well due to that my cousin had worked in the morning and then had something else to attend too late in the afternoon therefore only leaving me with a small part of the afternoon to film. Further, my cousin got dressed in her costume from the prior filming day as well as having the same hairstyle which was having her hair up with a large hair clip and the makeup that gives her a natural look. Taking a deeper look, this is the costume that the protagonist uses for the majority of the film. I especially chose this costume due to that it adds realism to the character therefore making the viewer feel like what is happening on screen could happen to them in real life. The normal clothing adds realism to the story which is a common part of Mis-En-Scene found in the thriller genre. Further, the makeup throughout the film was kept at a minimum to give the protagonist a natural look as another way to add realism, as it makes it relatable for the audience. For the opening scene, she has very light makeup, which for the later scenes, I added lipstick to make the difference as she is going to the event at the mall. Overall, her makeup is very natural which is another common part of Mis-En-Scene found in the thriller genre. Moreover, going into the scene, I did a medium long shot of the protagonist Gabriela as she slept on the couch while the alarm clock went off and then she sat up and looked towards the direction of the phone. Then, I did a close-up of the phone to show the alarm clock, which then transformed into a medium close-up as she grabbed it to turn it off. I could not get the timing of the alarm going off right as the clock app was malfunctioning and we could not waste time as I had very limited time with my cousin to film. Therefore, I took a screenshot of the alarm clock ringing, and I will add the sound of the alarm once I go through the editing process. This seems to be the best solution for the problem as the as the image of the alarm clock is only shown for a few seconds. Further, I decided to change the scene of her receiving a message from Nancy reminding her of the party due to that the over the shoulder shot felt unnatural for that scene. I decided to add a scene of her coming out of the bathroom and when she comes back from the refrigerator and is about to exit the front door, she will send a voice message to Nancy saying that she is running late and that she is on her way. Furthermore, we moved to the bedroom to begin shooting the very first scene of the short film which is the one of the protagonists sitting on her bed reading a book when she receives a message from her close friend Nancy telling her that she won a raffle ticket and wants her to go with her. After a few takes, I concluded that the over the shoulder shot in order to show the message was not going to work. Then, I decided that doing it in one take would be the better option as instead of using the over the shoulder shot, I would apply the camera movement of zoom and I would zoom in towards the phone. I ended up doing two takes of this as my cousin forgot the voice message part of the scene and the second take came out well, but she did not click on the ticket for the audience to have a clear view of it. Therefore, when I begin the editing process, I will paste the two takes together in order to create one cohesive one. From here, we went to film the newly added scene where she exits the bathroom, and she goes to grab a water bottle from the refrigerator. For that following scene, I placed my phone at a low angle inside the fridge to show as she got the water bottle. Then, for the very last scene, we waited for my mom to get home as we required her assistance. For this scene, she comes from the fridge with water bottle in hand, grabbed her jacket and keys and exited the front door. From here, the camera pans to the bedroom door and then I panned towards the door as it opened. Due to that the door opens when there is supposedly nobody in the house, which makes the viewer question that Gabriela’s dream might not have been a dream after all. My mom opened the door and I plan to add slow zooms towards the door when editing time comes. This concludes the filming process of my short film “Lucky.” Well this is my cue to leave, till next time reader!
