Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the full-length movie
Welcome back to my blog reader! Looking at the short film “9” by Shane Acker, it told the story about a ragdoll living in a post-apocalyptic setting where there is a monster who is taking the ragdoll’s souls. Further, my impressions of the short film were that the plot was simple due to its length, and that the film only focused on three characters who had no dialogue, which were the ragdoll’s 9 and 5, and the monster. In addition, the special effects of the film were meant to stop motion, but the film ended up being made with CGI with a low budget. Additionally, Shane Acker’s directorial style is known for its strong CGI and design. He knows how to look with a technical perspective and how to design CGI with a low budget while its quality remains high therefore making it his mark as it can be seen in the short film 9. Further, the conventions of the short film consisted of having a simple storyline, having a limited number of characters, conveying strong emotions that impact the viewer in a short amount of time, and having a low budget but also challenged conventions in a way as the film ended up being of good quality and special effects despite its low budget. Moreover, now looking at the full-length film “9” that was Directed by Shane Acker and produced by Tim Burton, Jim Lemley, Timur Bekmambetov, and Dana Ginsburg. The full-length film 9 follows the same plot of a ragdoll who is living in a post-apocalyptic world where there is a monster who is hunting the ragdolls for their souls. Furthermore, my impression of this version is that the plot is more developed due to that it was made into a longer film, and the film expanded its focus to more than three characters such as ragdolls 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and gave them dialogue. The special effects consisted of CGI and had a larger studio budget to back it up. As for the directional style, it remains the same from the short version as it is still Shane Acker who directed the film. However, other details were added to the film's style as more individuals were involved in the creation of the full-length version. Further, the conventions of the full-length film are that it had a more developed plot due to its length, had a larger number of characters, and conveyed strong emotions that leave an impact on the audience in a longer amount of time. Moreover, a main quality that that the short film possesses that the full-length film does not is the ability to cause the viewer to feel different emotions in a short amount of time. Further, something that was accomplished in the full-length film that was not in the short film was that it allowed for the plot to be developed in detail which allowed the audience to understand how their situation came to be and the characters backstories. Personally, I enjoyed the short film better, as it portrayed the story in a simple manner that still effectively carried the same message as the full-length version but did it in a shorter amount of time. Looking at the differences between the “9” the short and full-length film, they differ in that the full-length film explains in depth what happened to the world and its population while the short version does not go into detail. For instance, in the full-length film the viewer finds out the reason as to why ragdoll 5 loses his arm while in the short the audience does not. In addition to this, in the short film we saw ragdoll 6 on the monster’s back and the other ragdolls as ghost but there was nothing else that the audience knew about them besides that they were killed by the monster. In contrast, the full-length film offers their backstories which gives the viewer insight into their characters. Another difference between the short and full-length versions is that in the short film the characters have no dialogue while the full-length film does. Also, the films differ in budget as the short film version had a low budget while the full-length version had a much larger studio budget. Further, they did have one shared convention which was that of conveying strong emotions that impact the audience the only difference is in the way that it happens as one version does it in a shorter amount of time. Well this is my cue to leave, till next time reader!
